U13 SYL Boys Crowned National Champions
In Dramatic Penalty Shootout! November 19th, 2007
Game two the following day vs. Mustangs FC of Northern California was an instrumental task as a win was definitely needed. The boys showed more character during the match as both teams created good chances, however, both goalies were on form. Both teams were equal in strength. Weston’s midfield and defense was strong and really controlled the flow of the game. The forwards, however, left their mark on the game again as two critical chances were not converted. Not until the 70th minute did Brian James break down the right flank and center a pass which was cleared for a corner. On the ensuing corner kick Brian James floated a ball to the back post in which Sami Salim blasted a half volley past the outstretched keeper beating him near post and high to  go up 1-0.  Weston’s defense then withstood the challenge to hold the score at 1-0.
"We had a good showing against a top caliber team today," said James. "I am relieved that we came out with a 1-0 Victory."  After the game the players met with James back at the Hotel for a tactical session on the chalk board. It was apparent that if Weston wanted to win, goals would have to be scored. For James and the coaching staff, seeing little results was a concern. "Teams have not been able to stop us from scoring, and it is not that the opposition has a great defense, it is simply not taking or converting our chances."

Game three was another must win situation, as the other three teams in the group had a loss and Weston could not afford to slip up and tie or lose or they would be out of the Championships. Weston then set their eyes on Long Island Rough Riders.  Again the game got off to a slow pace each team feeling each other out.  Weston capitalized first at the 25 minute mark getting a goal from Nelson Calero on a through pass from Brian James to go up 1-0. The second half was more entertaining as Weston found their goal scoring prowess. Brian James struck a ball 20 yards out to beat the keeper and put Weston up 2-0. Five minutes later Brian James beat an offside trap moving through the defense to his left side, he passed to Dallas McCluskey who coolly beat the goalie from 12 yards out to put Weston up 3-0. With fifteen minutes to go a free kick was awarded to Long Island at the top middle right of the penalty box. Weston’s defense was busy setting the wall and with the goalie out of position giving instructions on which way to move, Long Island saw this and took advantage sending the ball to the open end of the net for an easy goal. Score: 3-1. Five minutes later Long Island was awarded a penalty after a forward was pushed in the back and fell in the penalty box. Long Island stepped up to take the kick but Weston’s goalie Juanes Fajardo was equal to the task and saved the shot diving to his right. “I thought that everything would unravel if they had scored to make it 3-2," remarked Coach James. Juanes really saved the game for us. With two minutes to go, John Bocinsky sealed the victory from another Brian James pass to close out the game at 4-1. Weston was now on their way into the semifinals against the New Jersey Junior Stallions. “We fought a good fight today and came away with the goals we deserved” said James...”Our Goalie Juanes did a tremendous job in saving the penalty and I am extremely happy for him. Maybe this is the spark we needed".

Weston’s semifinal game against New Jersey Stallions got off to a quality start as the defense led by Derk Simpson, Enrique Aguerrevere, Sam Pettit, and Anthony Ricci was up to the task of securing a clean sheet. “The defense, up to this point, has done a remarkable job thwarting many chances by the opposition and they have all done a terrific job said James”. Score at half time was 0-0. Second half and Coach James made a few tactical adjustments bringing on forward Ivan Shapiro and Sami Salim out wide. With 12 minutes to go John Bocinsky, playing midfield, found himself in the box on a pass from Brian James and with his back to the goal turned and shot only to see it deflected but he immediately pounced on the rebound and buried it past the keeper to put Weston up 1-0. With two minutes remaining, Brian James found Ivan Shapiro with a through pass behind the defense. Ivan was one on one with the goalie and out of the corner of his eye saw Nelson Calero parallel with him, he laid the ball off for Nelson who stroked it into the open goal to put Weston up 2-0. “That was a very unselfish play on Ivan’s part and that is why we are here playing in the Championships” beamed James. Now, for the final.
The championship game saw Weston play against Slammers FC out of Southern California. Both teams came out on top of their game as both were critical and cautious as to not allow for any mistakes. The game went back and forth and with play at its highest some chances were created on both parts but not obvious to the point of placing blame on an individual for not scoring or allowing penetration. No, this was a game of tactics. Movement off the ball was evident as was sheer determination to go all out and after both goalies came up with tremendous saves to keep their teams tied at 0-0, it was only befitting to have the game end at 0-0.
Overtime then took on a new meaning as both teams came out battling with the little strength they had left after five grueling games including the final. “We had to end it here” said James, but we couldn’t. Subs were used at the end of the 1st ten minute overtime period. Dallas McCluskey was inserted back into the line up in the event penalties were needed. At the end of the second 10 minute overtime it came down to penalties and seeing that goalie Juanes Fajardo had already stopped a penalty in the previous game, James was confident in the teams’ and goalie’s abilities. James selected his five players. Many were reluctant as the pressure was overwhelming for some. Others nodded yes Coach, I am ready.  Weston’s Captain, Brian James, and Tournament MVP, elected for the team to shoot first and stepped up to take the first kick, He slotted the ball to the goalies left, 1-0 Weston. Next was Slammers FC #14 who stepped up for their 1st kick, and to Weston’s joy was saved by Juanes Fajardo. From that point on Weston’s John Bocinsky, Dallas McCluskey, Ivan Shapiro, and Derk Simpson all converted their penalties to become NORTH AMERICAN SUPER Y LEAGUE NATIONAL CHAMPIONS.  Score 5-3 penalties. “We will take it any way we can” exclaimed James who is ever so proud of his boys.
