All players wishing to try out for the 2011-2012 Development Academy teams must attend the Weston FC tryouts scheduled May 31st through Sunday June 5th, (see tryout schedule on westonsoccer.net). Per USSF mandate, players will be identified and invited by the Weston FC Academy staff to participate in the Development Academy tryout to be held June 7th through June 22.

Weston FC Academy: Founded in June 2009, Weston FC Academy was formed out of a response from the US Soccer Federation to have a Player Development Program that would enable the USDA teams the ability to train at the highest standards. The US Soccer Federation requires at a minimum; training at least 4 days per week, specific technical and tactical training sessions, position specific tactical training, patterns and soccer specific fitness training; also included are player attendance, scouting reports, Showcase game analysis, written player analysis and many other player development issues, all of which is reported back to the Federation. The Weston FC Academy will be overseen by Carlos Parra, Director of Soccer for Weston FC; Marcello Neveleff is the Director of Weston FC Academy, with Victor Pastora, and Victor Musa serving as Academy coaches.

U-16 and U18 US Development Teams: These teams will be comprised of player born January 1, 1993 through December 31, 1995, in addition to some exceptional 1996’s.  Players will be placed based on ability and not necessarily age.  Stronger players will play ‘up’, whenever possible.  All of the hard work is paying off forWeston FC, both teams are vying for USDA playoff positions in the USDA Southern Region. The player’s progress has been evident in many ways, including six players receiving invitations to the U18 US National team camp and a record 13 players having been offered college scholarships. Special congratulations to Verneri Valimaa for making the U-20 Finnish National Team.

U-14, U15 and U-16 Weston FC Development Academy: Players born between January 1, 1998 and December 31, 1996, in addition to some exceptional 1999’s will be eligible for these teams. Building on the success of the inaugural Pre-Academy team and season, Weston FC has had two of their finest,David Mejia and Ismael Longo, invited to the US National team camp. The U15 and U16 Pre Academy teams will participate in the Pre Academy league, exclusive to USSF Academy teams. In addition, all teams will primarily play in FYSA sanctioned league and national tournaments, playing friendlies with USSF National and Academy teams, while adhering to the US Development Academy training mandates.  The U-15 team will conclude its season in the prestigious Nike Manchester Cup played on Portland, Oregon.     All inquires for these teams should be directed to our Academy Director, Marcelo Neveleff at gneveleff@aol.com.

U.S. Soccer Development Academy Description

Developing the Next Generation

U.S. Soccer’s Development Academy program is driven by the game and its players, coaches and referees.  This game-centric approach allows for long-term development to occur through a deep understanding of what makes players successful around the world.  As the sport of soccer grows in the United States, young players in our country need the proper environment to compete against the world’s elite.  The U.S. Soccer Development Academy program provides the optimum developmental environment for the nation’s top youth soccer players, coaches and referees by emphasizing development through quality training and limited, meaningful competition.

Meaningful Training

Academy teams spend a greater amount of time focused on training to improve as individuals and as a team. The teams and players receive direct feedback and evaluations from National Team Staff and ProZone video analysis. To round-out the complete training environment, Academy teams are tested in their physical capabilities using the SPARQ testing methodology and their hydration levels by Gatorade.  They also receive a SPARQ training curriculum for soccer-specific athletic training and Nutrition and Hydration recommendations from Gatorade’s Sports Science Institute.  Each athlete then gains a greater understanding of how they compare physically against their peers and what they need to do to achieve their optimal performance levels.

Competitive Environment

The Academy program features teams from the top youth clubs from around the country. Each Academy team plays approximately 30 regular season games to ensure all games are meaningful. Games are also played according to FIFA’s Laws of the Game and officiated by a pool of the nation’s top young referees in order to prepare players for the next level of competition. National Team Scouts regularly attend Academy games, so players are evaluated over the course of the season and in their natural positions allowing for better player assessment.

Early Success

As the program enters its second year, it has already dramatically impacted the player development process in the United States. In 2008, more than 100 players from Academy clubs were included in U.S. Youth National Teams and almost 800 graduates from the inaugural Academy class participated in college soccer the following fall. Virtually all college programs use the Academy program as a scouting vehicle and the program has received increased attention from professional scouts representing domestic and international clubs.
