Weston Fury 87/88 Boys Ineffective In 2-1 Loss

The Weston Fury 88/87 Premier boys’ soccer team gave up the lead and lost the match 2-1 to the Miami Strike Force Sunday at Kendall Soccer Park in Miami. The Fury generated little offensive firepower and made crucial mistakes on defense in the South Florida United Youth Soccer Association early-season match played in 90-degree heat.

Weston scored first, in the 12th minute. Midfielder Matt Mobley started the play with a pass to right outside midfielder Jeremy Weber in the offensive third. Weber sent the ball forward to Rodrigo Paredes on top of the six. Paredes beat the right fullback and put the ball into the back of the net.

Miami tied the match in the 31st minute. The Weston defense was caught up the field when the sweeper moved up to get a ball but missed. The pass through the middle resulted in a breakaway and the tying goal.

The Fury took seven shots in the half to Miami’s three, but the Strike Force was far more efficient. The pattern held in the second half, with Weston taking nine shots and putting six on goal, but failing to score. The Strike Force took seven shots, put six on goal and scored to win.

Miami’s go-ahead goal came in the 53rd minute on outstanding individual effort coupled with Weston defensive breakdowns. A Strike Force forward took the ball from the right outside midfielder, beat the right fullback and put the ball in at the far post.

Weston had an excellent chance to score in the 74th minute, but a defender covering for his out-of-position goalkeeper turned fullback Mario Figueroa’s shot away.

Marcelo Neveleff, the Weston Fury Soccer Club’s director of coaching, coached the team in place of head coach Alvin James and assistant coach Rene Osorio, neither of whom were available for the match.

Neveleff started Michael Anderson in goal, J.J. McFadden at sweeper, Figueroa and Juan Lopez at fullback, Leo Caldeira at stopper, Weber and Iker Ibanez at outside midfield, Jaime Villarreal at central midfield, captain Mobley at defensive midfield and Paredes and Jonathan (J.T.) Thiel at forward.

Also playing for Weston were David Gordon and Davide Bombonato at forward; Chris Bent, Bombonato, Lopez, Mobley and Paredes at outside midfield; Manuel Sotelo and Ibanez in central midfield; McFadden at fullback; and Mobley at sweeper.

Unavailable due to injury were central midfielder Luis Alva, sweeper Andres Velez, central midfielder Eugenio Lascurain and defender Jose Pablo Ruiz.

Weston, with a record of 4-4, is scheduled to close out the early season against the Palm Beach Hornets at 4 p.m. Oct. 15 in West Palm Beach and against Kendall Hammocks at 3 p.m. at Vista Park in Weston.
