Verneri Valimaa Invited to the U-15 (1993's) US National Team Camp
To be held in Oregon over President’s weekend. January 31, 2008

The US National Team staff, Paul Graefer and Wilmar Cabrera, were present at the Disney Showcase and recommended 3 players from the U-15 Boys Premier Team to the USSF National U-15 head coach, Jim Barlow. Out of the three recommended, Barlow chose Verneri Valimaa to attend the 7 day camp in Oregon, based on his play iat the Disney Showcase. Head WFSC Coach, Carlos Parra, couldn’t be prouder of the team and Verneri. Coach Parra said, "The hard work is paying off and the results are starting to show. This is just the beginning of getting more players involved at the next level, whether it be with the National Team, or higher."

Last year, WFSC U-15 goal keeper, Brian Sylvestre, was selected to USSF U-17 National team and is now in residency at IMG Academy in Bradenton. USSF U-17 Head Coach Wilmar Cabrera and  U-15 Coach Jim Barlow, both stated they liked the attacking style Weston represents. With Dario Redondo and Nick Perea being selected as alternates there are more players on the radar for the U-17 camp later in the year. Great job to everyone, every player on the U-15 Premier team deserves credit, congratulations to everyone.

U9 Boys Premier Kelme Cup Report

Not knowing what to expect the Weston Fury U9 Premier traveled to Naples, Florida to compete in Kelme Cup Tournament.    The tournament began at 9:30am on Saturday morning against a strong Countryside Gold team. The boys came prepared and played a simple game taking advantage of their opponent’s mistakes to win 4-2. In their afternoon game the Fury came out brimming with confidence after the morning victory to face Cape Coral. Weston dominated the game keeping possession for long periods of the match and cruised to a 9-1 victory.

After resting and preparing for the semi-finals, the Weston team got the news that they would play their semi-final against Braden River -- a team that they had played last year at the Sarasota, Puma Cup Final, losing on penalties. On a cold morning the Weston team came out ready to play and seek a different outcome from when the teams last met. The game started and Braden River stormed into a 2-0 lead and with just a few minutes left in the half Braden River got a penalty and a chance to go further ahead, however Fury keeper Federico Aquique had different ideas and made a brilliant save. The games momentum shifted and Weston stepped it up fighting hard to come back and win 3-2 and move into the Championship game against Key Biscayne.

The Championship game kicked off at 2pm and with the weather still very cold the Fury needed to warm up fast. Once again Federico Aquique provided the inspiration stopping all that Key Biscayne could throw at him. Knowing that it had to be a team effort the guys on the field moved up a gear and scored 4 goals, 2 from Max Romero and 2 from Augusto Todeschini.

When being interviewed after the game Head Coach Andres Bolivar said “this shows that our team is made of heart and passion and we are looking forward to competing in many more championships. My respects and congratulations go to a great group of boys”.
U 18 Premier Win Orange Classic, 2 Players to Participate in Nat’l Camp
January 10th, 2008
The winter break was anything but that for the Weston Fury Girl’s U 18 Premier. The team used the days before and immediately after Christmas to train and prepare to compete in the Orange Classic (OC). They had just concluded the 2007 half of their High School Seasons and immediately picked up their commitment to the Fury.

In the OC, the Fury comfortably won their group by scores of 1-0, 5-3, 3-0 to advance in to the semi’s where they dispatched the opposition in dominating fashion but were only able to finish two of their many opportunities (2-0). The Final proved to be more of the same as the OC U 19 green category was won in a PK shootout. The game should have seen the Fury come away with a decisive result but a combination of poor finishing, bad luck and quality keeping kept the score line close. In the end, the Fury was the better team in every game and deserved to be the Champions.

The team was able to shut out the opponents in 4 out of the 5 games and this is why they were able to come out winners. An effective combination of defense and goalkeeping kept the opponents off balance and unable to assert any real pressure on the games. In the one instance where the Fury had some defensive lapses, the team responded with a team high 5 goals to show that they can win tight, low scoring matches or a good old fashioned shoot out.
The most satisfying aspect of the whole tournament was not winning, it was the manner in which it was done. The Fury, at times, played some of the most attractive soccer seen at the entire tournament. The talk was all positive and many college coaches were present to inquire about the Fury Players coming to their respective programs. The rhythm exhibited, at times, was the highlight of the whole tournament and the team will continue to become more consistent in their display of beautiful flowing soccer.

With the OC over, it was right back to High School for most of the girl’s to compete in tournaments scheduled for Jan. 2 and on. For two Fury Players, there were bigger and better things ahead. Samantha Wright and Olivia Elias were off to California to compete in the U 19 Nat’l Camp. Both players represented Region III in the four team competition in front of the Nat’l Staff coaches. The girls are aiming to impress the coaches in the three game competition in hopes of being selected to the next gathering on the National Team in their respective age groups.

No rest for the weary would be the slogan of the break, but all things considered, the team would take it every time.
U15 Boys vs. U17 Girls National Team
January 6th, 2008
The U-17 Girls National team were on a six day training camp in South Florida in preparation for the 2008 U-17 World Cup or World Championships this summer. Many of the National Team players that attended a tournament in Brazil over Thanksgiving were present at this training camp. The Weston U-15 Boys were invited by the National Staff to play a friendly at the Holiday Inn sports complex off University on Sunday January 6th 2008.
The game started off at a very intense pace, with both sides not able to gain control or create any quality opportunities. Before the game the National Team coach asked if Laura, a local player from Team Boca, could guest play for the boys team, which turned out to be beneficial for Weston. Mid way through the first half, Laura stripped the US defender of the ball, beat the goalie, and slotted the first goal of the game. The game ended 1-0 in favor of Weston at half.
During the second half the National Team rotated the entire starting 11, which proved to make a significant difference to the pace of the game and early in the second half, Weston took advantage with Verneri Valimaa and Xavier Silva finishing off two great opportunities making it 3-0 Weston. Weston maintained control of the game, keeping the US Team under pressure and having many great scoring opportunities saved by a very talented National Team goalie. The game ended 3-0 in favor of the Fury. Hats off to Weston for a hard fought game against our Nations best.
