The U13 Weston Fury girls just finished participation in the 9th annual Orange Classic Soccer Tournament. The girls were in the top flight for the U13 girls and began play on Tuesday afternoon.
The Fury opened with Naples, a team they had played a few times previously. Naples playing very inspired came out and took the play to the Fury in the first 15 minutes and built a 2-0 lead. This seemed to wake the Fury up as they stormed back to tie the score at 2-2 before the half ended. The Fury also had numerous chances to take the lead before the half ended but could not find the back of the net. With the score tied at 2-2, both teams fought very hard in the second half. Neither team could break the deadlock and the game finished 2-2.
On Wednesday afternoon the Fury played Sunrise. Once again the Fury found a team that was going to come at them and put them under pressure. The Fury was able to withstand the pressure and find the back of the net to take a 1-0 lead into halftime. The Fury had the run of play in the second half and built the lead to 3-0 and went on for the victory.
Thursday the Fury would take on the Silverbacks from Georgia. The Fury would establish control of the game early and build a 3-0 before the Silverbacks would cut the lead to 3-1 on a free kick. The Fury would go on for the victory and finish in first place in the group.
The Semi-final was played Friday morning and would pit the Fury against the Silverbacks once again. The Fury wasted little time in gaining control of the match scoring 2 minutes into the match. With some solid play and better finishing the Fury would lead 3-0 at the half. The second was very similar as the first as the Fury had the run of play and would go on for a 5-0 win and put them into the final later Friday morning.
The final would put the Fury against a very talented Team Boca team that had beaten the Fury rather soundly a few weeks ago in league play. The Fury were looking to give Team Boca a better match and came out much more focused and with a purpose. Both teams battled throughout the first half but neither team was able to find the back of the net. The second half was much the same, both teams battling and creating some chances but neither was able to score a goal. The Team Boca keeper came up with a couple of brilliant saves and the Fury were unable to capitalize on a few great chances and the game ended in a 0-0 tie. The two teams headed to overtime were again the Boca keeper would keep them in the game by making some brilliant saves. After the two overtimes the game was still tied and the teams went to penalty kicks. Team Boca would shoot first and would score on 3 of the 5 kicks. Weston shooting second missed on 3 of the 5 and Team Boca was able to win the Orange Classic on Penalty Kicks.
This was a well played game by both teams. Obviously we are disappointed by the result but we showed a lot better than we did 2 weeks ago. Team Boca took us apart and for us to come back and play them to a draw was great for our confidence. We had some great chances to win the game but it was not meant to be. We worked a lot harder today. We battled like we used to. We had gotten away from the work rate and work ethics that made us successful in the past. Hopefully this will be a good reminder to the girls of the work that has to be put in day in and day out in order for us to be successful.
