RECENT NEWS:
The girls had their end of season party on Sunday, June 8th at the home of Debbie and Dan Stermer. We all had a great time and had a chance to reflect on our season accomplishments. Every family contributed to the great food and festivities for the day! It was amazing teamwork... as we have come to expect from this group :)
Nine players were given awards for outstanding play this season, each with a unique contribution and improved skills progress on the team. Those individuals were: Alyssa DeArmas, JoJo Erickson, Jessica Jahoda, Jessica Thornton, Nicole Milstein, Sydney Villalba, Kate Jacobsen, Katie Haimes, and Abbey Swierenga.
Megan Mahoney was given an Outstanding Goalkeeper award for her 15 shutouts and unbelievable season record as the teams sole goalkeeper this season! She has improved dramatically this year and was really counted on in the goal for us.
Two players were given "Coaches Choice" awards for dedication, talent, versatility and major improvement this season. These players were vital to the overall success of the team and at the top of their game according to the coaches. Caroline Fernandez and Adrianna Rosario were this year’s recipients and deserved every bit of recognition that was given.
Our final two awards were given to our offensive duo, Jaclyn Stermer and Michelle Roque-Paskow. Jaclyn was this years Most Valuable Player for her team leadership as captain, goals scored and assists to her team, and dedication to multiple teams not to mention her perfect attendance at all games and tournaments this season. She has been simply incredible and admired by her coaches. Michelle was given the "Offensive Superstar" Award for her amazing contribution as the team’s leading scorer and assists. She had 25 goals and 14 assists in a total of 39 games. She missed four or five games due to injury but still managed to be a major player in our offensive line-up. Corner Kicks were her specialty! All of the girls were recognized for those unique talents that they brought to the team this season and were encouraged to step up their level of play for next season and continue to build technical skill over the summer. Coach Vicky Rosario volunteered to offer free training clinics for them twice a week and hopefully everyone that is in town will find a way to take advantage of those training opportunities.
New Year Update:
We had a parent meeting after practice on Wednesday, January 16th at Vista Park. We discussed our roster situation with several injuries and the importance of the last few games and upcoming dates that the girls must be comitted for. There was only one conflict that was announced and that was Jessica for her confirmation. The following schedule depicts the games that we have left this year:
FLUGSA league games: January 26 - 27 Saturday, at Parkland 6pm and Sunday vs Coral Gables (at Vista Park)
FLUGSA Playoffs: Tentatively scheduled for February 23-24, only one day. We are definitely in the top 4!
Weston Fury Tournament: February 15-18 (Friday through Monday... waiting on schedules)
Region Cup: First three weekends in March - Qualifying rounds start March 1-2, hosted locally.
FAU 5v5 (Optional) April 6th in Boca Raton (We will divide and play with 2 teams)
News from early November:
CONGRATULATIONS to Jaclyn Stermer and Adrianna Rosario for being selected as Swoosh team captains for this season. Their dedication and comittment to the team and outside the team is unbelievable. The players also had an opportunity to rate their own individual leadership qualities through a simple self-assessment questionaire. In addition, they participated in selecting our captains through individual voting. I am certain that Jackie and Adrianna will do a great job leading the team. I would like to announce that Alyssa DeArmas will act on behalf of either captain in their absence during practice, league games and tournaments. She works extremely hard, is an ideal role model, and is always a very positive influence on the field. Hopefully our players will recognize these players as team leaders and respect them, as they do the coaches, for the duration of our season.
We will be having a parent meeting Wednesday night, November 14th at the field (8pm) after practice. The girls will be scrimmaging the Weston U-12 boys during practice so please have them come in their blue uniforms that night. The schedules have been finalized and are on the FLUGSA web site. There is a link to our 93/94 Girls Swoosh schedule and a combined U13-14 schedule under the game highlights link from our Weston Swoosh web site. Several dual rostering decisions have been made by the club recently to provide support to our team and the U-14 Premier Nike team due to small roster sizes during the season. This means that we can "share" those players when necessary on the same day if needed.
Dual rostered players for the Premier Nike team: Caroline Fernandez, Adrianna Rosario, Jaclyn Stermer and Jessica Thornton.
These players will be notified in the next week as to when they are expected to play with the Premier Nike team. We are also looking into guest playing opportunities for Abbey Swierenga on those days that she cannot make our league games. We did our best to accommodate scheduling conflicts but were not as successful as we had hoped. Adrianna will be traveling to Raliegh, North Carolina, with the Nike Premier team for the CASL Shootout next weekend (November 10-11). Best Wishes to Jaclyn on her upcoming Bat Mitzvah that same weekend... I truly hope all of the girls have a fantastic time celebrating with her. Alyssa DeArmas, Katie Jacobsen and Jessica Thornton have been selected to guest play with the Premier Nike team for the Orange Classic tournament over the Holidays (Dec. 27-30) if they are available. Alternates will be selected as needed.
PREVIOUS NEWS:
A parent meeting was held on Monday, August 20th at 8pm (Vista Park).
Team Manager: Janet Fernandez
Tournaments & Travel: Debbie Stermer
Treasurer: Maria Erickson
All three parent volunteers gave an update on the tournament in Orlando (October 6-7). All players are expected to attend that tournament since we elected not to play over Labor Day. Please see the Training & Tournaments section of the web site for other tournament dates and let Janet Fernandez know what dates you are available. Debbie Stermer is organizing the rooms for our October tournament so please contact her via email if you have any questions. Maria Erickson will be collecting money from each family to pay for the first tournament... more details to come!
*New volunteers were selected to help out with the following roles:
Team Photographer: Vicky Rosario
News Articles & Web Site: Patti Barney
Fundraising: Karen Jacobsen and Linda Swierenga
Communications: Sean Mahoney
Weston Fury Tournament: Dana Villalba and Tammy Thornton
*Janet Fernandez will get with each volunteer to explain (in more detail) the expectation of these roles. There will be a pizza party poolside on Sunday, August 26th from 3-5pm for the girls to have some fun and spend time together. Many of them do not know each other and need some bonding opportunity :) Janet Fernandez will send or give more details on Wednesday.
Coaches Summary: The girls are very focused and excited to learn. They were asked to complete a self-evaluation form and turn it in by tonight. Several players still need to submit them. They all have different strengths and most of the players have already recognized what those strengths are. We will discuss the evaluations as a group to help us build confidence as a team before we start our season. Their willingness to learn independently, and from each other, will offset their current lack of technical skills. Parents, your role is to stay positive and concentrate on those strengths (forget the weaknesses :) The girls were commended by GuiGui and Patti for an outstanding performance during our round-robin scrimmage last week. Their intensity, teamwork and communication was excellent. We emphasized our need to have the same level of comittment & desire during every practice session. Obvious note: The girls are not well-conditioned. They only train 2 nights per week and will need to condition "on your own" so we can emphasize technique and tactics while training. You can find tons of information on the weston web site: http://www.westonsoccer.net Click on "Girls program" and 93/94 Girls Swoosh to find the forms such as Tournament information, Activity Logs, Conditioning Worksheets and Jump roping illustrations. Most of our communication will be done through this web site. Check it often and do not expect us to constantly call or print these materials. Players should have their daily Activity Logs with them at practice in the event I ask them to share it with the group. This will create competition: a desire to compete physically! Several "Rules" or reminders were given: NO jewelry, get to practice on time, and improve our warm-up/stretching component. Coach Barney believes this is a GREAT "mix" of players & parents. She looks forward to a very successful year of teaching & learning ... with a focus on both team and individual player development.
