The U-12 Weston Fury Boys team has been accepted into Dallas Cup XXVI. The U12 Blue team is very excited to be one of the 28 teams selected in their age group to be invited to this prestigious tournament.
The Dallas Cup began in 1980 with the Texas Longhorns Soccer Club being the founding club. The scope of the tournament rapidly grew into an international competition. The Dallas Cup remains to be a very unique competition as it encompasses youth team through the Under 19 age group. Notably the Under 19 "Super Group" has been recognized world wide.
"The U 19 Super Group is an unbelievable array of talent. Every year Under 19 apprentice professionals play in these teams, you can imagine what the level of play is like" Dave Simeone, WFSC Technical Director. Simeone knows first hand with over 20 years of experience in North Texas. "I can recall when U.S. National Team Midfielder John O'Brien played in the U19 Super Group with Ajax of Holland and when Brazilian Striker Juninho played with Sao Paulo" – Simeone. This years super group also see Aston Villa F.C. Academy from the England’s premiership compete.
Teams from all over the world will be attending. Last year teams from Europe, South America and many other countries participated, which makes this a very diverse competition.
The U12 boys team applied in September for the tournament to be held in March over Spring break. Over the past year the U-12 boys have won several tournaments, Countryside Easter Classic, Weston Memorial Day, Raleigh Cup and Plantation Thanksgiving tournaments, all of which help establish this team as one of the "Premier" U-12 teams in Florida. Jerry Willenborg, coach of the team says, "The best part of being accepted to the Dallas Cup is the ability for our team to experience competitive soccer outside of Florida." We look forward to the challenge and the opportunity to play in the Dallas Cup.
